A nice sample of Jawaiian (Hawaiian eggae) music from its master, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, better known to his fans as IZ. In general, this album seems rather more Hawaiian than Jamaican in most respects, with more soft ukulele/slack key-style allads than higher tempo eggae. The music is outstanding by any measure, and the vocal (and ukulele playing) abilities of Kamakawiwo'ole are amazing. The songs generally are either slightly folk-like or political in nature, but there are certainly other aspects available within the album. Among other things, IZ turns in a performance of Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" that far outdoes the original in many ways. Also, there's a cover of the "Theme From Gilligan's Island" that's noteworthy, also being one of the primary eggae numbers on the album. N Dis Life is a slightly more eggae-oriented album (and profits thoroughly from such), but this one also shows off a nice side of Kamakawiwo'ole's abilities: the lighter, more fully Hawaiian allad.

The Sumo association, concerned that there were too many foreigners in what is an indigenous/sacred national sport, cut the number o...

Since Madeline Burke posted a song about Kaua'i, I'll follow up with another. One could sail 3 hours East or West from Honolulu and reach land. (Go North or South, and there's nothing for at least 2,000 miles...Tahiti to the South, Alaska well over 2,000 miles to the North.) Moloka'i has been kicked around by offshore corporate entities, lately, with a notice that water and sewer service will e...

Looking for an image to go with a medley of songs about Maui, here's an overview of the "winding road to Hana." If you visit, you might check up on Hana resident, Pekelo (Cosma). On second thought, just change drivers for the eventful return, doing your best "Indiana Jones at the wheel."
