The Heartless Bastards, formed in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2003, is a garage rock band. They are often compared to fellow Ohioans and Fat Possum labelmates The Black Keys, but they are also known for the powerful vocals of frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom.

Well, I have wanted to get more exercise for about three months, so I won't call that new. Discovering great music is hardly something new, and if anything I should always be watching my musical budget. I always have ideas about being more efficient, especially with school. This is my new favorite song (for at least the next 15 minutes). It is called "All This Time" and it's by a group called Heartless Bastards (out of Ohio, I think). To truly appreciate this song, you need to be driving on a long stretch of highway, sunny day, windows rolled down, alone with your thoughts.... MORE

This 3-piece band from the Queen City is the best thing to come out of Cincinnati since the Afghan Whigs...this is a track off of their debut disc...enjoy. Wow...i am exhausted! The creativity it took to make that video has tapped me out...must...get...to...fridge...for...beer... MORE

Other people have written about this second album from The Heartless Bastards, but let me just chime in: it's a monster. Significantly better than the already excellent Stairs and Elevators...much prettier production, more complicated arrangements, some piano...and still one of the great rock and roll voices of our time from Erika Wennerstrom. If you haven't heard her sing, it's hard to believe such a big sound comes out of such a tiny woman. Janis, Grace Slick, Plant....... MORE

One of my favorite songs of 2005 was the Heartless Bastards' "My Maker," which was on their debut, Stairs and Elevators. That song was bluesy but it rocked. Lead singer Erika Wennerstrom's voice didn't sound like other blues singers. It's "soulful, tough and flecked with blues," as critic Jennifer Kelly wrote, and it has a quality that at times reminds me vaguely of Patti Smith. "My Maker" was intense, and I must have played it 50 times.
