Spanning two discs, Personal Best: The Harry Nilsson Anthology is a comprehensive overview of Nilsson's varied career, including all of the hits and many significant album tracks, yet it offers too much material for the casual fan, who would be better served by All-Time Greatest Hits.
The idea of this post is to try to create a musical path or mix of certain elements (cover, sample, or auditory minutiae that can connect the tracks) of a song and see how far you can go with it. This is a test of your music geekiness, so rack your brains and see if you can add to the post. For example I'm starting with Aimee Man's cover of Harry Nilssons ??One?? which will be followed by The B...
Preface: I originally was not going to post this because I did not want to ride on the coat tails of Ben Gibbard. I'm not wholly certain of the statute of limitations on "post overlap." Case law is fuzzy, as always, and the statute books are clearly _not_ up to date (still list "sodomy" as a felony and for some reason you can't park your horse in front of a synagogue or a supermarket on Thur...
For the next 24 hours or so, we're under blizzard conditions. 10" of fresh blowin' snow already down with another 10" on the way. Where's global warming when ya need it? Oh well, plenty of stuff to do inside. Hope everyone out there is safe, warm and happy.
This is the song that brought Harry Nilsson to the attention of the Beatles (Lennon, really). A slight recording, it lacks the anger and bile of Lennon's version (w/The Beatles), and replaces it with a vulnerable whimsy. So How 'bout this one, then?
Hello, my name is Kate and I am an addict. A vinyl addict. I first realized I had a problem when I was 16. I should have known it would be impossible to save money while working in a record store. As time goes on my addiction has gotten worse, and recently I reached an all-time low.On vacation in the northwest, little did I know that I would almost go broke (my wallet and my back) buying re...
Harry Nilsson's classic tune sets the tone for what is in my opinion, one of the finest movies ever made.Using the term 'Underrated' for these posts was a really bad idea. Not sure if an Oscar winning film could ever really be underrated, but so it goes. This was just the perfect song choice to start this amazing film about a small town man who takes his shot and moves to New York City. Enjoy '...
Such a great little New Orleans influenced bluesy number with a memorably sparse arrangement. I am not sure who wrote the original, but there is a much earlier version by Louis Jordan in the comments.
Harry Nilsson was admired by The Beatles for his unique pop sense. I don't know much about him, but I absolutely love this song, which was sampled by Blackalicious on the Broken Arrow LP. The picture is Nilsson accepting a 1969 Grammy. His work spans ballads, 60's pop, 70's rock, folk etc. The whole Anthology is a great listen. What's stands out to me the most is his sense of playful humor, and ...
...is this place in Baja California just south of Ensenada where the ocean builds up in crevice in the cliffs and eventually the water shoots out of a hole in the top like a geyser. It's pretty neat and a fun local tourist destination in the Ensenada area - more so for the Mexicans than whitey (they don't tend to venture off much further south than the harbor in Ensenada). Every time my best fri
