Didn't we all love Harry Nilsson? (sigh)...well I'm home sick and songs about illness pervade the air. Or maybe what I'm smelling is the dab of Vicks I put behind my ears. Didja ever notice how Nyquil comes with its own little plastic shot glass? It's a party now! Gesundheit!... MORE

Such a great little New Orleans influenced bluesy number with a memorably sparse arrangement. I am not sure who wrote the original, but there is a much earlier version by Louis Jordan in the comments.

For the next 24 hours or so, we're under blizzard conditions. 10" of fresh blowin' snow already down with another 10" on the way. Where's global warming when ya need it? Oh well, plenty of stuff to do inside. Hope everyone out there is safe, warm and happy.... MORE

This one goes out to a Mog friend who says she doesn't know the song.
I wish she could hear the best version!

The idea of this post is to try to create a musical path or mix of certain elements (cover, sample, or auditory minutiae that can connect the tracks) of a song and see how far you can go with it. This is a test of your music geekiness, so rack your brains and see if you can add to the post.
For example I'm starting with Aimee Man's cover of Harry Nilssons One which will be followed by The Beta Bands Won which uses a crucial sample from that song to construct their song.... MORE

I was just going through some tunes I want to put on M, which I should have up by late afternoon today (Friday). Harry Nilsson blows me away, his music is all over the board. I'm going to crap out and not do him any justice here. In case you don't know his name he was very popular during the '60s and '70s and this is just a breezy little song from what some consider to be the first remixed album "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet".
If I've managed to intrigue you in any way, che... MORE

A few moths ago a freind and I had a conversation about the song's that should never be played in public. I don't mean the bad ones. I'm talking about the ones that are so freaking sad that they can ruin your day. (or at least the next hour)
We tally'ed up our choices and then asked other people around us. I recived some pretty interesting opinions.
Now that I've discovered M.O.G. I want to hear from you.
List your top five (please dont play this in public) song's.... MORE

Two of my favorite singer-songwriters. I love this cover of Bob's song. Its got an incredible beat and a real explosive feeling to it. Another cut from the Pussy Cats album he did with John Lennon.

This is the song that brought Harry Nilsson to the attention of the Beatles (Lennon, really). A slight recording, it lacks the anger and bile of Lennon's version (w/The Beatles), and replaces it with a vulnerable whimsy. So How 'bout this one, then?... MORE

...is this place in Baja California just south of Ensenada where the ocean builds up in crevice in the cliffs and eventually the water shoots out of a hole in the top like a geyser. It's pretty neat and a fun local tourist destination in the Ensenada area - more so for the Mexicans than whitey (they don't tend to venture off much further south than the harbor in Ensenada). Every time my best friend and I go south of the border, we make sure we do a pit stop at La Bufadora (... MORE

Covers Sunday again. Here's a little gem off a great library find of the remaster of Nillson Scmilsson, that included a bunch of bonus tracks. The Badfinger story is one of the more tragic rock n' roll stories out there. I wont go into the full details here, but basically you had a great band that got mired in label mishaps and a crooked manager and were unable to perform or tour due to a lawsuit. Pete Ham ended up hanging himself, and the other members had to get day ... MORE

"Pussy Cats" was an album by Harry Nilsson released in 1974. It was produced by John Lennon. At this time John was separated from Yoko (at her request) and he was in LA partying and hanging out with guys like Keith Moon and Harry. They got into all kinds of trouble including getting kicked out of a nightclub for heckling The Smothers Brothers. This is one of the songs that John Lennon wrote at the time. A surprisingly mellow heartfelt track from a very dark period in his lif... MORE

While I haven't read anything of the sort, the song really reminds me of some of Van Dyke Parks work. Could Mr. Parks, being the film composer, have had something to do with this? I don't know.
