AMG Review of Mr. Trumpet
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideConsidering its opening number, a strong Dixielandish version of "The Sheik of Araby," athis CD starts out quite promising but its extreme brevity (just 29 minutes) and some sticky muzaky strings on the ballads result in a lower rating. Trumpeter Harry James is in good form, whether it be on a relaxed "Indiana," a recreation of Benny Goodman's version of "Don't Be That Way" or a swinging "Hot Lips," but every song on this set would have benefited from being twice as long.
