upcoming: Grouper & Kria Brekkan

"I'd Rather Follow A Tidal Wave" Last night I found out at that the Silent Barn will be hosting one helluva show this Sunday. The venerable Ridgewood, Queens DIY performance space will showcase the quiet sounds of Kria Brekkan (mum, kria & avey tare) and Portland's absolutely enchanting Grouper, whose Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill is showing up on a lot of year-end lists, and with good reason.

new Grouper :: "false horizon"

I love Grouper 's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill LP quite a little bit , and her new song "False Horizon " -- which appears on an upcoming split 7" with her friend City Center -- was apparently recorded at the same time as Dragging , which would explain why it's so perfect. City Center has this to say about Grouper's latest:"Liz's song is exclusive to this release, and (was) recorded arou...

New Grouper - "False Horizon"

Grouper's Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill includes a few of this years most hauntingly beautiful tracks . Add "False Horizon" to the pile. It was recorded around the same time as Dragging , but Harris just posted it at her MySpace (via GvB ) in anticipation of its appearance on a split 7" with City Center. New Yorkers should note the tour dates while they're at her site: She's appearing at the K...

Go into the final echelons of the free National Gallery’s free exhibits and you notice a startling transformation. After rooms of portraits, full of delicate religious figures, historical depictions and general personages of import, the paintings sudde

Lost 8 of '08 - #7: Grouper

Some records slip beneath nearly every radar. DiS even missed some of our writers' favourites from our end of year list (either because they hadn't been reviewed or mentioned by their peers). So, these were the eight that you and we should have been celebrating...

Lost 8 of '08 - #7: Grouper

Some records slip beneath nearly every radar. These brilliant albums end up not only missing out on end of year plaudits but throughout the year these records failed to procure the reams of verbiage they deserved. These are the outsiders; the records which people weren't brave enough to crank out on their airwaves, nor to fill a page or two of their publications with. These are the records so ...

Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill sounds like a thankless job being rescued from obscurity to oblivion, as one does to love gone awry, friendships turned sour, jeans that no longer fit. The thing is dead, you have that for peace of mind, and yet Liz Harris is going forensic on you again: between wind and water, what killed hardest? At least once, there is melody you almost grasp before you find it'...

Grouper: Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (2008)

--- - |- New WaxGrouper is Portland songwriter Liz Harris, and information on her is somewhat scarce so the music will have to do the talking. Listening to her new album Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill feels like a Vicodin-induced haze. Like that time I flipped my car on the interstate and wrecked my arm and they gave me enough pills to numb a killer whale. Grouper's new album is chalk-full of ...

On Land Fest, the Counter to Outside Lands, to Feature Grouper, Ducktails, Keith Fullerton Whitman

Anti-Festivals seem to be all the rage these days. Pitchfork Fest had its mostly word-of-mouth Bitchpork Fest with Times New Viking, Cave, Wet Hair, Bird Names, and others running a samurai sword through the well-oiled machine in the park. Now it turns out San Francisco is planning something similar in anticipation of the unholy Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, featuring Pearl Jam, Dave M...

ATP Vs. Fans Live: Grouper

For somebody who specialises in the rich layered chilled out ambiance that Grouper proffer, she surely must have been disappointed to get the lead-off slot at this year's ATP Vs. The Fans Festival. The first slot on the Central Stage is basically a warm-up for the sound engineers and the distorted, ethereal sound of her recent album, Dragging a Dead Deer Up A Hill sounded crackly and stagnant.

Grouper - Hold The WayI'll be frank, the song is ok to me, but in the "spirit" of Halloween being celebrated in the office today I'm posting this unnerving video. This is a video you could play in the background of a Halloween party up on a big screen.

Video: Grouper - Hold The Way

We couldn't even begin to explain what Grouper sound like and we doubt any of you could without using at least ten different muttered, stuttering examples. With just one member, Liz Harris, the band is really just a strange, ethereal project by one dedicated singer-songstress and a woman who has so far released three full-lengths under the moniker.

[Bootleg] Grouper at ATP

While I’ve always enjoyed Grouper’s recorded work, she’s a whole other beast live. The first 15 minutes of her performance at last month’s ATP festival *slamming head on desk for not going* is nothing but the most epic nature music ever. Flying over mountains, exploring oceanic trenches – her live shit is stratospheric and aquatic. [...]
