Wednesday under covers - Gregory Isaacs covers Bunny wailer
about 1 year ago

As I was locked out of here on Sunday, this cover is a few days late - sounds very early Eighties dancehall, maybe Sly & Robbie on rhythm duties, on a cover of the old Wailers 1966 Studio One r'n'b gem "Sunday Morning". as usual, i've tacked on the dub.If you're not familiar with the original, you can find it here -http://mog.com/Baudolino/blog_post/155383

get my desire, then I'll set the plantation on fire". I suspect *this* is the tune Mos Def namechecks, as in brittanybf's earlier question. It was recorded round about 1977 at Black Ark, on a Lee "Scratch" Perry remake of the Heptones "Get In the Groove" riddim, but ended up being used for a number of Niney the Observer hits by Junior Delgado and I.Roy

A Gregory Isaacs rarity now

this 45 came out around 1978 on the Hawk-Eye label, based in North London, produced by T.Douglas and Gregory Isaacs . The dub side is credited to the Leggo All Stars. Other than that, I know nothing about this disc. It's not the same mix as the one on "Cool Ruler"/"Slum Dub" as far as I know.EDIT: A little extra hunting reveals that Trevor Douglas appears to be one of the founders of Cash & Carr...

This one dates from 1975 - some of you might recognise it as the riddim to Dr Alimantado's "Gimme Mi Gun"

The original is a a superb piece of work by Dobby Dobson for producer Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label. Dobson was reportedly paid £10 for his efforts - covered here by the great Gregory on his 1976 album Extra Classic. I'm pretty sure I've got Dobson's original on a compilation somewhere, so if Baudolino doesn't beat me to it then I'll post that when I find it.

Gregory Isaacs - The Early Years

I guess you could say this is nothing more than a collection of material from the beginnings of Gregory's career...and you'd be factually right...you'd also be leaving a lot out...Gregory's output over the last 35 - 40 years is ridiculous...he's the rare artist, like Marvin Gaye or Stevie Wonder, who can make deeply conscious music without ever sacrificing its accessibility, or commercial appe...
