"Canadians," observes Craig Ferguson, "are the nicest people on Earth...until you put a Hockey stick in their hands, then they turn into crazed killers on ice!" These are the panting-dog-days of Summer, but soon there will come the sights and sounds of Winter, when Hockey season arrives. The subject of this song is more lover than fighter, moving from team to team, and scoring more off the ice ...
When I first heard this track, the first thing that came to mind was: Bikers! So I did a Google! search for "Outlaw Bikers," then looked for "Canadian Bikers," and, finally, "Newfoundland Bikers." Looking over the links I came across this very interesting group: The Salvation Army Motorcycle Club. There's a Canadian branch of this started-in-Norway club, which goes with this track.
When you leave the old country for somewhere new, it's inevitable that something/one is left behind. There are numerous tales of emigrants who planned to work for a stake and go back home. Most found that the "Gold Mountain" was made of copper coins, and stayed longer than they had originally planned.
Great Big Sea's "Fortune's Favour" CD release liner notes are short on details and long on acknowledgments. (Do I notice a trend here?) Fortunately, such details are available at the band's website, which influenced which MP3s I uploaded. This Friday-night-at-the-dance track was left off "Something Beautiful," but here is the tale of a teen in a borrowed pickup truck in search of a dance partner.
I bought "Fortune's Favour" recently, listened to it, then went to Amazon to see what other buyers had to say about this GBS studio release CD. Early posters were disappointed or angry at their second Pop outing. I did find "Something Beautiful" different, but the title fit. Here's the second tune on the CD, where "Hamlet" does his thing...
I tried listening to Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys tracks. The rage and volume of Punk just isn't my kind of music, I guess. (I can almost make out what the Dropkick Murphys are screaming about, but I'm far past speed listening these days.) So I'll drop anchor in St. John's, instead, where anger and bitterness trot along at Folk speed. (This was The Great War, after all.)
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/04/02itunes.htmlHere's my take on the EMI/Apple "No more DRM" campaign, reported previously:The future for EMI artists is a 256K/sec. music file at the Apple iTunes music store. Since I encode MP3s at 192K/sec., I'll be looking over the EMI signed artist list for someone "interesting." For the moment, here's an artist that will play on Ye Olde Pismo at 192K/...
Here's a modern tale of fishermen, boats, and green-eyed-envy, live. If this is Gideon Brown's boat, you've got to feel their chagrin at trying to match such aluminum hulled perfection.
I found Great Big Sea's "Play" CD at the annual Hawaii State Library book fair. For once, it wasn't a hot, humid, windless day, and the music CD is just as relatively cool. I thought of a picture of seagulls, but this song is a kind of road tale.
Courage & Patience & Grit: Great Big Sea In Concert [11/21]
My friend the Killbot is absolutely right ... Courage and Patience and Grit is the best Great Big Sea live album yet. Road Rage was a disappointment and the Great Big DVD & CD was OK, but more interesting for the promo videos than for the concert. This, though, is what they've been striving for ... It captures the best of their live energy in two sets: An acoustic set consisting mostly of the Ne...
Great Big Sea is one of those hybrid bands that defy pigeon-holing. At once they're a rock band with a Celtic bent; or perhaps they're a Celtic band with a rock influence. Either way they're a Canadian group with a fantastic repertoire of both original and traditional music. Their original music such as Sea of No Cares from the album of the same name harkens to and brings to life the ancestral ...
