I tried listening to Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys tracks. The rage and volume of Punk just isn't my kind of music, I guess. (I can almost make out what the Dropkick Murphys are screaming about, but I'm far past speed listening these days.) So I'll drop anchor in St. John's, instead, where anger and bitterness trot along at Folk speed. (This was The Great War, after all.)

I found Great Big Sea's "Play" CD at the annual Hawaii State Library book fair. For once, it wasn't a hot, humid, windless day, and the music CD is just as relatively cool. I thought of a picture of seagulls, but this song is a kind of road tale.

My friend the Killbot is absolutely right ... Courage and Patience and Grit is the best Great Big Sea live album yet. Road Rage was a disappointment and the Great Big DVD & CD was OK, but more interesting for the promo videos than for the concert. This, though, is what they've been striving for ... It captures the best of their live energy in two sets: An acoustic set consisting mostly of the Newfoundland folk music that made up their last studio album and an electric set... MORE

Here's my take on the EMI/Apple "No more DRM" campaign, reported previously:
The future for EMI artists is a 256K/sec. music file at the Apple iTunes music store. Since I encode MP3s at 192K/sec., I'll be looking over the EMI signed artist list for someone "interesting." For the moment, here's an artist that will play on Ye Olde Pismo at 192K/sec., on Rounder records.

Great Big Sea is one of those hybrid bands that defy pigeon-holing. At once they're a rock band with a Celtic bent; or perhaps they're a Celtic band with a rock influence.
