Black day in JulyMotor city madness has touched the countrysideSo begins Lightfoot's Black Day In July, a song Lightfoot wrote about the 1967 race riots in Detroit. But after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. a week earlier - on April 4, 1968 - many top-40 radio stations in the U.S. refuse to play the song. They fear the lyrics will ignite violence. Lightfoot tells CBC Radio, he's no...
The EDMUND FITZGERALD foundered on Lake Superior during a severe storm November 10, 1975 at approximately 7:10 pm about 17 miles north-northwest of Whitefish Point, MI at position 47°0'N by 85°7'W in Canadian waters. The FITZGERALD was running downbound loaded with 26,116 tons of taconite ore pellets from Superior, WI for Detroit, MI. During the height of the storm in 70 knot winds, 25 foot wav.
Those of you who read my LJ know that I post a song of the day every day (well, almost every day), and that January's theme is "Songs That Make Me Happy". After I posted today's song, I heard this one while I was getting ready for work, and it just set the morning up perfectly. It's now a song that makes me happy, too.Oh, and another thing that makes today great. I went to McDonald's for bre...
For the longest time, I kept hearing about this song, but I kept forgetting to look for it when I came across Gordon Lightfoot LPs. Finally, I found it in a collection and played it instead of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" or "Early Morning Rain." It richly deserves it's reputation as an epic song, as it shifts gears like a train climbing varying terrain. Here is the "Canadian Railroad T...
I'm very aware that this is far from a creative choice when it comes to Gordon Lightfoot's music, but as much as I'd love to be hipper to things than I am, I'm not. My exposure to Lightfoot came as a kid, with my father's copy of Sundown. I know the big, popular tunes of his, and that's it.So I'm as guilty as anyone else when I say that Gordon Lightfoot deserves a lot more attention than he g...
1975 and five years old. Sitting in the back seat of the big green Plymouth Fury. My Dad sets the radio and I am introduced to some of the earliest sounds. At this stage it's just music. I don't even know if I like it. Something about Delta Dawn and Flowers On The Wall. It all blurs this many years later, but I can still remember hearing Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot. My Dad loved the Wreck...
Seems old Gord has lied to us once again. A woman's body has been found on the north shore of Lake Superior.http://www.miningjournal.net/stories/articles.asp?articleID=8209This is it buddy.Sundown, my friend, sundown, you'd better beware...

A few months ago, i relised that the Wierd Al song "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota" sounds alot like Gordon Lightfoots song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerld." Both are great songs. Weird Al's makes me laugh, Gordon's makes me cry. I love Gordon Lightfoot. And Weird Al. And i downloaded the Icehouse song, electric blue. It's my myspace song.
