Live 1973 is an archival release recorded during a transitional period for Gong. Upon the departure of its original rhythm section, drummer Pip Pyle and bassist Christian Tritsch, leader Daevid Allen hired two new players. Classically trained Swiss percussionist Pierre Moerlen filled the drum chair, and following the audition of several bassists, Fiji-born Mike Howlett was given the position allegedly because of his astrological sign. Following the hiring of Howlett, Moerlen, and guitarist Steve Hillage, Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth left Gong briefly, only to return a few months later. Despite being selected for criteria other than musical ability, Howlett's deft and funky basslines fit right in with the rest of the band, and Paragong toured France without Allen or Smyth for the first months of 1973. Here, a lighter, funkier, spacier lineup was coming into its own, soon to develop into another high-water mark for the band, both artistically and commercially.
