Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1 1949) is an American poet and musician known primarily for his late 1960s and early 1970s work as a spoken word performer. He is associated with African American militant activism, and is best known for his poem and song "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". He is the son of Jamaican footballer Gil Heron, who was one of the first black professionals to play in the UK.

Gil Scott-Heron is an American poet and musician well known for his music in the 70's. "The revolution will not be televised" was his most successful song, but he does have a huge catalog that is worth checking out. I knew Gil Scott-Heron's message would be lost amidst the masses' general confusion when, in the nineties, his epic statement "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" was restated (by KRS -One, of all people) in a Nike commercial. Perhaps the only positive from that travesty was Scott-Heron received a well-deserved royalty check.

Gil Scott-Heron is a lyrical and musical genius.My dad was playing some of his stuff in the car a few years back and when I heard 'The Revoulution Will Not be Televised' Mr Scott-Heron had got my attention. This was one of the first times that I was actually interested in the jazz that played in the car and at home on occasions.
