A year after their first meeting on record, pianist George Shearing and singer Mel Torme (this time with Don Thompson on bass) had an equally successful joint recording. The material is often a bit offbeat (including the obscure swing song "Shine on Your Shoes," "How Do You Say Auf Wiedersehen" and the early bop vocal "What's This") but there are also inventive remakes of "Stardust" and "Hi Fly" along with two instrumentals: "Oleo" and a Shearing piano solo on "Away in the Manger." Obviously this CD is full of surprises; all of the Torme-Shearing Concord sessions (which bring out the best in both of the principals) are well worth acquiring.
