In 1995 the Jazz Hour label brought out Gene Krupa & His Orchestra 1946 Live! Here's a whole CD's worth of live material that doesn't show up in most Krupa sessionographies. Tracks one-nine were recorded live at the Palladium in Los Angeles on January 8; tracks 10-17 document a gig that took place in Culver City on March 31, and tracks 18-22 come from a Navy Show broadcast dated September 5, 1946. This is the loud, exciting, brassy, op-inflected ig band that Krupa proudly led during the second half of the '40s. Trumpeter Red Rodney is featured on "The Man I Love," saxophonist Charlie Ventura explains "These Foolish Things," and Anita O'Day shares "That Feeling in the Moonlight" with crooner Buddy Stewart. An invigorating blast of postwar ig band op and swing, ideal for stickball, freeway driving, or scrubbing floors.
