All Music GuideMiles Davis' band "was indeed [playing] on another level," says Bartz of his tenure with Davis. Heavily influenced by this experience, this Ntu Troop outing reaches for that plateau. Named after his daughter, Taifa was recently reissued in England with its companion album Uhuru. Bartz creates an electric energy with mostly acoustic instruments; his sax melodies have a strong vocal quality, similar to Hendrix's guitar. That sound, complemented by Andy Bey's distinct tenor, gives the album its spiritual intensity and dance accessibility. "Free Your Mind" and the tone poem "Rain" best exemplify the project's scope. Although some tracks meander (as Davis could), this is some of the most experimental and daring jazz-funk on wax.
