AMG Review of Amar Sangit (Immortal Music)
Bob Tarte
All Music GuideG.S. Sachdev plays the North Indian bamboo flute, the bansuri, with particular mournfulness in this collection of improvisations based on Indian classical and folk tunes. Even on lighter material, his style often recalls the tragedy-drenched meditations of Armenian duduk adept Djivan Gasparyan rather than the comparatively airy approach of Mindia Devi Klein, for instance (who interprets similar material on Ragini, Fluted Voice of the Goddess). Helping spirit these meditative pieces along is fine tabla playing by Swapan Chaudhuri, whose percussion is mixed a tad too far in the background to bring genuine exuberance to the material. Amar Sangit is available individually or as part of the Global Relaxation box set with three other discs.
