Fucked Up’s The Chemistry of Common Life captured the 2009 Polaris Prize for Best Canadian album and winning the $20,000 prize that comes with it. Good news but I do feel bad for Chad VanGaalen losing out with his excellent alum – Soft Airplane.I didn’t provide as much coverage as I did last year regarding [...]Related posts:Polaris Music Prize 2009 Longlist Sucks I guess I expect too much
Whenever a band named Fucked Up does something so high profile it is a little more special. Last night the band took home the 2009 Polaris Music Prize beating out high profile Canadians such as Metric, K'NAAN, Malajube, Great Lake Swimmers, and Chad VanGaalen, for their 2008 release The Chemistry of Common Life. Now you all know how I feel about this record so in my mind there wasn't even a com...
Toronto’s Fucked Up came to Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple to perform the future hardcore punk classic The Chemistry of Common Life in it’s entirety. The band brought some guests including hipster darlings Vivian Girls on backup vocals and world class pianist/party-rock king Andrew W.K to tickle the ivories (well plastic keys). Despite what sounded [...]
("Golden Seal" & "Days of Last" w/Andrew W.K.)Since releasing The Chemistry of Common Life last year, Fucked Up have been one of the most consistently played bands on my iPod. Their music gets to me and turns me into something of a maniac as soon as the first gut wrenching wail rips through my ears. It has led me to see the band a couple of times already and each time I walk away from their sho...
I probably wasn’t the only one to give a half-hearted “meh” when they announced the Polaris Short-list and Fucked Up was included. I know tons of pundits were heaping praise on the TO hardcore outfit, but to me it seemed like a great way to stick another band with fuck in the name dead into Stephen Harper's gullet (and pump the scene in our nation's largest city). I had only heard a few son
In a hurry to get inside, I forgot to look up at the marquee to see if Fucked Up was really spelled out up there for the world to see. Why in such a hurry? For one, it was a rainy cold mess outside. But mainly, 3 sets with a lot of potential await [...]
maybe its cause of the girl i hate right now, or my recent increase in the taking of mind altering substances, or something. either way this song sounds good. the rest of the album is sick too. fucked up is exactly what i need right now, musically i mean. they remind me that music is whatever you want it to be. it doesnt have to please everyone. quality of fans over quantity of fans... i dont k...
Fucked Up's The Chemistry of Common Life should show up on a few year-end lists. Taking a break from marathons , the Torontonians stopped by Daytrotter and played stripped-down, underwater-psychededlic versions of three songs from said new one and one from Hidden World : Listen
Imagine, if you will, 1000 Marbles coming at you all at once. What would you do? Run away? It'd almost certainly be futile. Imagine the coverage! The Fucked Up live experience is similarly inescapable, and the band are over here again at the end of the month for Shred Yr Face 2 , also featuring Rolo Tomassi and The Bronx. Here, the aforementioned Mr Marbles (guitarist in the band, Mike Haliech...
The new Fucked Up's really good. (I'm still digesting it, so hard to say if it tops Hidden World , but it definitely gives it a run...) As mentioned when posting "No Epiphany ," The Chemistry of Common Life 's a collection of lush, kick-ass wall-of-sound hardcore rock 'n' roll that adds flute, horns, organs, and ambient/fuzzy instrumentals to vocalist Pink Eye's gruff shouts and the rest of the...
Whether they're having the likes of J. Mascis , Moby or Les Savy Fav 's Tim Harrington guest at their recent twelve hour gig in New York, or appearing on the (admittedly hidden-in-a-bag-of-free-gifts) cover of NME, Fucked Up certainly seem to be the hardcore band du jour.
