In Frank Zappa’s autobiography, The Real Frank Zappa Book, he dedicates an entire chapter to describe the daunting task of getting an orchestra to perform his original compositions. Attempting such a feat cost Zappa well over $250,000, but failed to...
Got some Lumpy Money lying around? Why not spend it on a new Frank Zappa 3-CD set.It seems fitting somehow that the box set commemorating the 40th anniversary of the release of two early Frank Zappa albums was about a year late. I mean, the guy lived in a log cabin with a bowling alley in the basement, so what's a year, give or take, among friends? It was 41 years ago that We're Only In It For T...
You know something? Before Frank Zappa died in 1993, he was a lot of things: a tireless tinkerer, a musical adventurer, a trail-blazing perfectionist, an outlandishly innovative band leader, and a caring and, shall we say, "highly original" husband and father. But you know what? There's one thing he wasn't: a good-looking man. Such trivial physicalities were clearly of no great importance to th...
So Lonesome Cowboy Burt has stepped on a rainbow at age 70:From The Independent:Jimmy Carl Black: Drummer and vocalist with The Mothers of Invention"Hi boys and girls, I'm Jimmy Carl Black, and I'm the Indian of the group". This was how the drummer and occasional singer with the original line-up of The Mothers of Invention would introduce himself on stage and on record.Led by the guitarist, com...
It's hard to explain the effect Frank's music has had on me.At its simplest, it amuses the hell out of me. At its most complex, it forces me to think about my own life's endless possibilities and whether or not I'm living up to my full potential. Something happens once all that is Frank clicks for you - it fully colors how you view the world around you and your place within it. Once the infam...
OK guys and girls, this a masterpiece of an album, one that really could exemplify the classic rock period of Zappa´s gigantic oeuvre. Between 1973 and 1975, Zappa released 4 amazing classic rock albums ( Over-nite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy & Elsewhere and my favorite of them all, One Size Fits All), Apostrophe was, for the very first time in his career, a commercial and critically acclaimed ..

From Frank Zappa’s 1968 masterpiece We’re Only In It for the Money comes this inimitable ditty about a pair of morons who enjoy lighting farts, among other things, and somehow winding up finding their talents put to good use in the military.

The people behind "Zappanale Festival,":http://www.en.zappanale.de/index_en.html the German-based Frank Zappa dedicated music festival, are being sued by Frank Zappa's widow. Gail Zappa believes that using her late husband's name has a price tag, a £200,000 price tag. She also has some other demands. "Ms. Zappa wants to pick the acts performing and wants a new logo that doesn't carry Zappa's t..
I have thought about this more than once: I have never (for an extended period of time) lived alone. I went from parents, to roomates in college, to roomates in Minneapolis, New Haven, New London, Chicago, and then I got married. My roomate situations have been many, but one thing has remained constant. I usually roomed with people who were as crazy or crazier about music than me.In the previou...
Crap. I can't find my favorite Frank Zappa clip on YouTube. It's his musical performance of "I'm the Slime" from the '76 season of Saturday Night Live. It's a classic. Back when there was no CGI or special effects, Zappa managed to have slime ooze out over a TV on the set. But, it doesn't exactly ooze, it more like streamed down the TV set. Whatever speed the slime fell at the track is my favor...
I saw this cartoon and just had to post it. I remember, bo, bo! This album made a very big impression on me at my tender age of 17. Not just noise and confusion. Note the jazz and modern "classical" compositional techniques. It certainly can happen here, and it does all the time.
