After pushing back the release date of his vowel-less project SVN FNGRS twice, Black Francis a.k.a. the Pixies' Frank Black will finally release the project's mini EP on April 15th, 2008 (yeah, Tax Day). The seven track, 20 minute long recording was made in six days. Here's some SVN FNGRS action taped in Paris, France this past February. Black, Black Francis or whatever you want to call him is asking fans for help in making a video for the album's track "When They Co... MORE

Frank Black caused quite a ruckus in Dublin on the evening of 9 February. The former Pixies singer was performing outside of Steven's Green when police freaked out and arrested him. According to nialler9, he was busking on the street and playing tunes on his acoustic guitar. He was scheduled to play later that evening in Vicar Street and I haven't seen any reports of him not showing up, so he must have sorted things out. Here is some chaotic video from the scene of the cr... MORE

I love the call for happy music. I have been struggling under the burden of heavy books and only occasionally popping into Mog of late. I was also on a heavy electronic music kick for a few weeks there, maybe you noticed. So here is some happy organic matter from Black Francis off his first solo album. Killer smile inducing track!... Frank Black “93-03”

Okay. Let’s just get the Pixies’ references out of the way before we get down to the brass tacks here. Yes, you got me there: Frank Black did front one of the most innovative bands to ride the alternative music wave. Yes, the Pixies were mavericks that registered on the Richter scales for bands you may have heard of such as Radiohead and Nirvana, who cite the Pixies as among their biggest influences. The latter even credited th... MORE

I'm in the middle of this book by Daniel Levitin called "This is your brain on Music". So far it's an elegant examination of the brain's processes in perceiving music. Some of it is pretty technical - a conversation about frequencies of harmonics/overtones and some other sophisticated music theory shouldn't drag the dedicated reader down too much.
Anyway, I thought it appropriate to talk about this book a little for my first post since this MOG thing seems to have a "b... MORE

A spokesperson for Frank Black announced the release of his "Best Of" Compilation. Black is best known as leader of the influential alternative rock band Pixies, where he performed under the stage name Black Francis.
Frank Comments on the compilation:
"I felt a little sheepish when my manager suggested a Best Of: I'm not exactly known for my hit records. But then, I didn't get into this to have hits. I did it to be a maverick, to be underground, to be part of that ... MORE

Frank Black will transform himself back into Black Francis for his upcoming album, Bluefinger, the N.M.E. reports. The first single, "Threshold Apprehension," will be available as a digital download on May 7. Bluefinger (Cooking Vinyl) was inspired by Dutch painter Herman Brood. "I used a couple of Herman Brood's painting titles for songs of my own for my new record," Black told N.M.E. "I have my own impressions as to what his painting 'Threshold Apprehension' was ... MORE

Frank Black, err... I mean, Black Francis is coming out with a new album later this year called "BLUEFINGER". Here are four videos I made as a tribute. Each video took an hour to make.
This is how I made the videos:
Download the song from itunes, download a movie from archive.org, open up Windows Movie Maker, insert both media, and splice & dice the video so it matches up with the dynamics & changes of the song.
The youtube reviewers rated the videos well. ... MORE

I started taking cell phone photos at all the shows I attend. They're generally blurry and, by total accident, cool and artistic. Enjoy.
From Frank Black's solo show at Harlow's in Sacramento on August 31, 2006. He played mostly Pixies tunes. I wrote an article previewing the show for the Sacramento News & Review.... MORE
