Everclear's major-label debut is a tough, melodic set of gnarled post-punk hard rock. An easy comparison is Nirvana, but Everclear's music is closer to the country-rock leanings of Screaming Trees -- underneath their loud, grungy guitars there is a distinct rootsiness lacking in most Seattle bands and that gives Sparkle and Fade its edge.
After _Nirvana_ and grunge and all that, popular music really splintered off and turned into a whole lot of bland, sound a like schlock, schlock we're still muddling through today for the most part. I went out to Santa Monica for the first time today...even rode the Ferris Wheel, i was SUCH a tourist! Everclear's Sparkle And Fade album was then playing in my head all day. I LOVED this record.
