I must have 10 versions of this song, by Pavarotti, Lenotyne Price, Nat Cole, etc, all beautifully sung, and yet, it's this version i keep coming back to. She breathes after virtually every syllable, and it's some of the most excreable french ever sung...also, don't miss her rendering of the line Noel-elll, Noel-Hell! ...and still, it works...

Miss Etta James needs to be in more jazz dj's rotation this time of year, that's all I have to say. I don't think she makes it on "O Holy Night" but this track certainly adds some sexy to your eggnog.

sometimes after a busy day i just like to get home and play me some music to shake off all the stress... not that i stress too much, but you get the picture. this song does the trick... etta james, "come a little closer" lp recorded for capitol rds in 1974. it may be the rockish etta james track i know of but still pure 70's soul. don't get fooled by the awful record cover and play it loud!!

Though this song has been done by nearly every artist since it was written in 1934 by Ray Noble, this is by far my favorite version. It is on the tribute album to Billie Holiday, who did a cute, sped up version of this song. I guess I just love the way Etta sings it. It is slow and sexy. Great song by a great lady.

This blog (James Wolcott's blog led me to it) posted a lovely tribute to 45 RPM labels, in all their multicolored, eternally recognizable, scratched, faded glory. The manager of legendary blues singer Etta James has revealed that she is in stable condition after complications arose during abdominal surgery. Lupe De Leon told reuters that James hopes to be well enough by the end of the summer to join B.B. King and Al Green on their blues tour.
