AMG Review of Il Prato (The Meadow)

All Music GuideWith Il Prato Ennio Morricone indulges his deepest classical leanings, creating a luminously intricate score rich in tradition and period detail. Written primarily for piano, flute, and woodwinds, the music largely eschews the hallmarks of Morricone's trademark aesthetic in favor of classical structures and orchestration. But at the same time, its melodic grace is plainly the work of il maestro, and what at first blush seems a sweet if single-minded effort reveals new levels of complexity upon subsequent listens. As a model of sheer craftsmanship, Il Prato ranks among Morricone's grandest achievements. Few composers can create so much from what seems like so little.
