Emily Haines, maybe you know her work with Broken Social Scene , or Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. Or maybe you don't know her at all. You should though.
This solo performance, from NPR, showcases her slightly idiosyncratic piano style and her dusky vocals.
She's also a gifted harmony singer, as her work on The Stars cd "Set Yourself On Fire".

Until yesterday I only knew Emily Haines from her Broken Social Scene work. Kristiana mentioned her and Metric in a post and I took this as a sign that I'd better get to know Emily Haines better. Heard the Metric cover of Elliott Smiths' Between The Bars........and I was convinced. One of my favorite releases of 2006 came from Metric's lead singer Emily Haines. This release she always puts second to her Metric work -- but I love it ten times more. She has a soft lyrical voice, like a sad lamenting Regina Spektor.
I love the way she writes and I love her lyrics (bras started burning up ribs in the sixties). She has a great view on the world and, long story short, give her a listen and go buy the entire album.
You'll listen to it forever.

I am in love with her album. I've had it for awhile, but it's just so great, and I can't stop listening to it. I wish I had seen her when she played in Toronto last weekend. So upsetting that I didn't get to go.
If you don't have this album, you need to buy it.

It was a good show. Personally, I was glad there were seats because my feet are most of the time killing me by the end of every show I go to. She played everything (I think) off of Knives Don't Have Your Back, as well asa Neil Young cover. She also read some of her dad's poetry as well. Look it up sometime.

I absolutely love Emily Haines. I love everything about her. The way she thinks, the way she portrays things. Her lyrics are amazing! And I have a chance to see her in concert, and i'm so fuckin excited. Hearing her music makes me want to learn how to play the piano. She is so inspiring. I just got Emily Haines' new album, Knives Don't Have Your Back. I like it, it's a five stars out of five sort of album. Except for one little thing that bothers me with it. On this album, Emily Haines sounds almost exactly like Holly Cole. Emily's voice is just a bit higher pitched and a touch lighter than Holly's. The similarity is more pronounced in some tracks than others; in Doctor Blind the similarity is eerie. Even the stylistic and sound engineering choices ... MORE

I saw Metric for the first time at CMJ last year. They performed at the Hiro Ballroom as part of the Filter Magazine party. Emily was wondering around, talking to people and at the time I had no idea who she was. I just thought she was another hot indie gal that was there for the show. Watching her on stage is a treat.
