Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was where Elton John's personality began to gather more attention than his music, as it topped the American charts for eight straight weeks. In many ways, the double album was a recap of all the styles and sounds that made John a star. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is all over the map, beginning with the prog rock epic "Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)" and immediately careening into the balladry of "Candle in the Wind." For the rest of the album, John leaps between popcraft ("Bennie and the Jets"), allads ("Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"), hard rock ("Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"), /p>

ovelties ("Jamaica Jerk-Off"), Bernie Taupin's literary pretensions ("The Ballad of Danny Bailey"), and everything in between. Though its diversity is impressive, the album doesn't hold together very well. Even so, its individual moments are spectacular and the glitzy, crowd-pleasing showmanship that fuels the album pretty much defines what made Elton John a superstar in the early '70s.

In 1987 I found a stray puppy that was part Cocker and part chow, Bennie. After 16 years of wonderful companionship, I lost my dearest friend in July 2003.In August 2003 I found Benny again, this time as a boy (everyone always thought she was a male puppy lab - so she came back as a boy lab/chow mix). I'm not sure what I believe in, but I honestly believe Bennie came back.Benny is just like t...

Elton John is currently singing "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" on the radio here, and almost everyone in the room is singing along under their breath. This is especially endearing because most of them are dudes.

People thought I was weird for liking this song

There was a bowling alley a couple of blocks from my high school, so we had 3-week bowling units in gym class. At least we did until the bowling alley burned down.Anyway, during my sophomore year I started borrowing records from the library again. I did it when I was a kid to listen to children's music. I borrowed a couple of Elton John records to give them a new listen. Having been born i...

Another good soul departs this earth

Last Friday, another truly kind and wonderful soul left the earth that we inhabit. A close friend of our family passed away after a long illness, and though it was expected, it's still a very sad passing.I've been thinking about Joe a lot since I received the news. He and his family moved into our neighborhood when I was four, and many a day was spent in their company as I was growing up. Ma...

friday random ten, 1973 edition

1973 was a big year for us … we got married on May 26, 1973. 1. Mott the Hoople, "All the Way from Memphis." If Bob Dylan had used T.Rex as his backup band, it might have sounded like Mott. Add Andy Mackay's sax and you've got a great song from a great album. It's a mighty long way down rock 'n' roll. 2. El Chicano, "Tell Her She's Lovely." Hard to believe these guys weren't more popular nation.

We’re just mere days away from the start of the first Phish festival since Coventry - Festival 8. Among the possible remaining albums Phish may cover is Elton John’s sprawling and slightly underrated double-LP Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. While we’re not quite sure Trey or Page could hit some of the high notes on this one, it may make for a fun night - check out the album’s title track from
