In 1995, Nine Inch Nails were one of the biggest bands in the world and The Downward Spiral had catapulted them to all new levels of rock stardom. Elliott Smith, however, was still 3 years away from his Oscar-nominated breakthrough “Miss Misery.”...

His lyrics, sentiments and musical composition on his album, Either/Or, have won me over. The appeal is the simplicity in his style of music and the realism in his lyrics. Too, I am huge on acoustics and this particular album is high on that vibe. I need MORE MORE MORE.Though I am aware that he has passed on, I appreciate him leaving his music for us to discover and appreciate. I wish I had kno...

I'm really not trying to overhype New Moon but it was just brought to my attention that Pitchfork has a track up and you too can download it. Listen to *"High Times":http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/download/42345-elliott-smith-high-times-mp3*over at the p-fork. EDIT: Am i the only one who senses any irony in the posting of a new track from Elliott on Friday the 13th?
I can't say exactly when I discovered Elliott Smith. Maybe it was the time the rest of the world did. Maybe it wasn't. But all I know was that when I listened to his music, I was changed. Something very heavy was going on with him. Some recognition of the human struggle, but amplified. When the rest of the world discovered him, it was because he came out in some great soundtracks. My per...

The fans of the late, great Elliot Smith had to wonder after the leak of the Basement b-sides, if there was anything else coming. And there was, years later, at the hands of a poster on the Sweet Adeline message board. She hasn’t said specifically who she got it from, we don’t know the era it was created in, all I can tell you is that it’s called Grand Mal and it’s now, yours to have and
Thanks to Dave for bringing this to my attention. Smith's pal Mary Lou Lord had this recording which just surfaced yesterday. For the rest of the set (including a partial Elvis Costello cover) head over here.

Fuck yeah. In my opinion, Elliott Smith's songwriting and composing skills were on the level of an elite few. In a lot of ways, I think his songs were very similar to The Beatles (in structure, not style). He just happened to be an emotionally scarred junkie. I know comparing music to The Beatles is against the rules, but I believe that Elliott was on that level as a songwriter.Elliott died in ...
