This is my first post following the "Sunday Under the Cover" theme day, so I thought best bringing my dear Ella Fitzgerald covering Louis Armstrong's hit "Mack The Knife".
What you're listening here is the proof of her improvisation geniality (no wonder she got that Grammy award for this concert).
Although she messed around with the lyrics, Ella managed to elegantly take this song to the upper level.
One fine delight for a Sunday evening.

I have no idea when it happened. It could have been before I moved to Alburtis in the early 80's but more than likely it happened all the while I was growing up. I always snatch up those albums from the 60's when they had legendary jazz or classics singers do covers of pop songs. Although they are often not the singer at a career high point they are always fun to listen to. Sometimes the artist is clearly trying to get through having to sing what they consider crap or else trying to adapt the song to his style and in the process butcher it. (Dean Martin's Hey Good Lookin' for example) But it is always wonderful to see an artist... MORE

Shy in her personal life, Ella Fitzgerald had no fears in front of a microphone. When she used her three-octave range to interpret a standard, she didn't just sing another American pop song. She was raising the bar to a place where all other singers to come after her would be judged, and few have ascended to her status. Because Lady Ella could sing. Outside of a few luminaries (Joni,Janis,Grace)Classic Rock was dominated by male artists. So here's a Clasic Rock Mix, that attempts to right that wrong. Now that she'd been dead at least ten years, the U.S. Postage Service released a new stamp yesterday (actually, the first new stamp of 2007) celebrating Ella Fitzgerald! Interestingly, it was released as part of the "Black Heritage" series instead of the Jazz series of stamps. I can't help what wonder what Ella would have thought. 'round here, with a 3 and 5 y/o in a small city apartment, privacy is a sometime thing. on weekends we've a new institution, Nap Time, and we close the door, and she lets her hair hang down...and we kick it off with a grievous-tini, basically iced absolute citron over ice, and cue up the most romantic lead possible to possibly the most romantic album ever...and she makes me glad that i'm her man...

ella fitzgerald was remarkable. truly remarkable. no one before or since like her. working where i do I have the pleasure and honor working with a huge swath of her recorded material. i swear she never had a bad night or bad session. . . . the ability she had to perform complex music and make it sounds so easy was amazing . . . she swings better than anyone and no one ever scat sang as well as she did - with the possible exception of Louis Armstrong . . .
