If nothing else, these guys deserve their props from an historical perspective. Another chapter (or perhaps a paragraph) in the incredible volume of modern music. Truth be told, I was never a fan, but that does not negate the fact that left a mark. Perhaps an inspiration for those who followed or if nothing else, an influence. What do you folks think? From the liner notes:The Move was one of the...

ELO have made their mark in music history books with some mighty '70s power anthems - "10538 Overture," "Strange Magic" and "Don't Bring Down (no no no no no)" to name a few. Today news hits that the band's former bassist Kelly Groucutt has died following an unexpected heart attack. He was 63.Following a stint in the UK band Sight And Sound, Groucutt joined ELO in 1974, three years after Jeff L...

Mashups have limited appeal. By this, I mean that if you are not familiar with the two (or more) tracks being "mashed", they fail to impress, and there is no reason to listen to them. So, being firmly ensconced in old fart-dom, I need mashups of old songs, i.e. ELO's "Evil Woman", the Supremes' "Stop! In The Name Of Love" and a touch of Michael Jackson's "Bad".

This, to me, is THEE Electric Light Orchestra. I don't want to sound like a snob, but frankly I have had no use for the more mainstream ELO after this. Lynn and Wood struck that perfect note and it just does not exist in any other time. I suppose would like later stuff if I hadn't heard this. But HERE the songs are so personal, poetic, poingent. The music so different from what was going d...

so i was sitting on the couch eating shrimp and watching the godfather on tv, when during a commercial break, i heard a very familiar sound. the commercial was about dish washers or something, but i was consumed with the song they played. i couldnt remember who it was by, but i knew i had it somewhere. off to my computer (vito corleone would have to wait) to search for "Mr. Blue Sky." my comput...

I remember seeing this ad around Thanksgiving day, I wanna say three, maybe four years ago. It stopped everyone in the room, and when it was over, everyone asked, "What was that SONG?" I can't remember if I even knew, and I always know that kind of thing. For some reason I found the spot oddly, ineffably moving. I still don't know why...but I still adore the spot; I think VW consistently has th...

I've been working on a song for a quite appalling length of time now, and its title - "Classic Rock" - is essentially its subject. What I wanted to create was a tribute to the kind of music that, since the punk movement, has far too often been dismissed by critics and self-anointed connoisseurs as "overproduced" (see my post explaining why Queen is the second greatest rock band of all time for...

I know, I know. I haven't posted a song from this century in a while...but this ELO song just seems to say it all for me. If you could have seen all the grinning, excited faces of my little students today and heard all the animated chatter, you'd have been humming Mr. Blue Sky with me. It's all very Hopeful.

yes, i'm a bad bad girl. i've been away for far too long. but sometimes life just sneaks up behind you and beats you to the ground and you start focusing on all the shitty things and forget to look up. and then one day you do, and you see the bright blue sky and the gorgeous white clouds and think to yourself, "you know, this ain't so bad!"and what prompted me to look upwards? i got excepte...

Former members of ELO and ELO Part II who now call themselves "The Orchestra," are hugely popular in Europe. As their name and background imply, they play songs from both previous bands. Usually they only tour the UK and the continent, but this year they have a July 17 show in Detroit, at the DTE Energy Music Theater. They've also got a performance listed on their website for The Fort Willi...
