AMG Review of That Toddlin' Town
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideTo celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first jazz album (meaning a specially released series of 78s that came out in 1939), a variety of Chicago jazz veterans under the leadership of rhythm guitarist Eddie Condon (all of whom gigged regularly with Condon anyway) jammed through ten Dixieland standards. Trumpeter Max Kaminsky, trombonist Cutty Cutshall, tenor-saxophonist Bud Freeman and clarinetist Pee Wee Russell formed a particularly potent frontline and their LP (which has yet to be reissued on CD) has such highlights as spirited versions of "Chicago," "I've Found a New Baby," "Love Is Just Around the Corner," "Oh Baby" and "Nobody's Sweetheart Now."
