All Music GuideLive in Japan brings the overseas date from their 1990 tour (the last featuring leader Maurice White) to DVD. Though by this time much of the original EWF lineup had been replaced, songs like "Kalimba Tree," "Shining Star," "Let's Groove," and "After the Love Has Gone" still sound fresh and vital, thanks in part to the disc's Dolby Digital Surround Sound. While it lacks any special features that the DVD format can provide, Live in Japan is still a decent presentation of a dynamic performance from one of R&B's most innovative groups.
