AMG Review of Up the Mississippi with The Dukes of Dixieland
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideFor this "concept album," the popular Dukes of Dixieland (featuring trumpeter Frank Assunto, trombonist Fred Assunto and clarinetist Jack Maheu) perform a dozen songs that in their titles have something to do with the South or the Mississippi River. None of the selections (which include "South," "Milenberg Joys," "Down by the Old Mill Stream," "Old Man River" and "Down by the Riverside") are exactly new material, but the Dukes, through their spirited ensembles and lively solos, manage to uplift the tunes and make them sound fresh.
