For this outing (one of at least six albums that the group recorded for Audio Fidelity in 1958), the Dukes of Dixieland perform a dozen songs dating from the 1920s or before, many of which could have been used in minstrel shows. Fortunately, the Dukes, posing on the LP's jacket, were not made up in blackface. Their renditions of such tunes as "Dixie," "Old Kentucky Home," "Swanee River," "Wait 'Til the Sun Shines Nellie" and "Bill Bailey" mostly drop the sentimental and dated aspects of the music in favor of jamming the numbers in spirited fashion. Frank Assunto was always an underrated trumpeter; he is matched on this occasion with trombonist Fred Assunto and clarinetist Jack Maheu in the septet.
