AMG Review of Private Collection, Vol. 4: Studio Sessions - New York (1962)
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThis is the third of ten volumes of previously unknown Duke Ellington sessions made available in this valuable CD series. One of the strongest in The Private Collection, these rarities from 1962 include early versions of several selections that would later be included in Duke's Sacred Concerts, two otherwise unknown but fun Paul Gonsalves originals titled "Major" and "Minor," Thelonious Monk's composition "Monk's Dream" (here mistitled "Blue Monk") and "September 12th Blues" which welcomed trumpeter Cootie Williams back into the band after a 22-year absence. Recommended.
