All Music GuideThis CD contains virtually all of Duke Ellington's recordings before he had developed his own musical identity. Starting off with a piano roll from 1924 and including obscure vocals by Alberta Hunter, Florence Bristol, Alberta Jones and Jo Trent, the valuable set also has all of Ellington's earliest instrumentals, cut during the years that his Washingtonians successfully struggled and landed an important association with the Kentucky Club. Highly recommended to collectors but certainly too primitive for most of Ellington's fans.
