The most important figure in 20th century Brazilian popular music - perhaps after Jobim, but nobody else - has died at 94. I know I've posted Caymmi before, but he was a really special man and always worth hearing. His songs - which he was given to rearranging and re-recording multiple times, as if to demonstrate just how durable they were - have the simplicity-that's-not-really-simplicity that marks, for me, the greatest pop music. I'm sure she meant well. However, she forwarded a chain e-mail to my work address today that was quietly devastating. It was a slide show of Christo Redentor, the Christ the Redeeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, taken from a number of different angles, in daylight and at nighttime. Now all I can think about is how much I would love to go back to Rio de Janeiro (otherwise known as the coolest city in the world). For reasons of money and time, it ain't happening any time soon....
