Holy gazungas! Dolly Parton will be joining bands like Yo La Tengo, Tokyo Police Club, Okkervil River, for the 2008 SXSW music festival. In addition to Jim James solo set, the My Morning Jacket frontman will also be performing with his bandmates. Festivities kick off March 12th through the 16th. Click here for the entire list. Two things stand out when discussing the music of Dolly Parton ; Her incredible voice & her ear for a good song. Though she was often saddled with overblown arrangements in her early years, as she gained power she gained more artistic control, allowing her to stretch and explore the great World Songbook.
So here she is, with Nickel Creek doing yet another version of Blowin' In The Wind

I was listening to another one of my massive playlists earlier today, and this one popped up... Talk about killing two birds with one stone - a cover song AND a mash-up! Gotta love it. Dolly does a surprisingly nice version of Stairway to Heaven here, and I really like the slower tempo of this mashup as well as the artists DJ Earworm chose for this mix. Dolly Parton's new label Dolly Records will be solely for her. No other artists will be signed to it except for the buxom Southern belle, according to her manager and GM of Dolly Records, Danny Nozell. "It's really the first mainstream country record Dolly has done in 17 years," Nozell told Billboard.com of the album which is due in February of 2008. Dolly Parton To Receive Prestigious Award At Songwriters Hall Of Fame Event It was announced today that Dolly Parton will receive the prestigious award, which is given to individuals who have already been inducted into the songwriters hall of fame. The award criteria states that recipients "whose body of work is of such high quality and impact, that it upholds the gold standard set by the legendary Johnny Mercer". Many thanks to eshep, my secret Santa, who sent me a magical variety of songs to please me at the year's end. I'm sure he knew I would love Dolly Parton's version of "Seven Bridges Road." I knew this song, but not the Parton version. I had not heard any of the other tunes on the cd, which is nice. I will be discussing several of the songs in future posts.
