Dirty Projectors - Rise Above

Blog post image preview Dirty Projectors - Rise Above (Dead Oceans, 2007) 9 stars out of 10 So many ways to begin talking about such a great work - likely to be the year's best album - that it's unfortunate that I've got to pin it down to one, but I'll choose Jorge Luis Borges. In 1939, Borges published a short work of fiction called "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote" (read it here) in which a writer takes on a major project: to re-create the original Don Quixote word-for-word without using ... So the Dirty Projectors headlined our After the Jump Fest fundraiser on New Years Eve. I showed up for Neimo, and stayed for these guys at midnight. Critically acclaimed! Not having been bowled over by the previous sets I had seen (opening for Jarvis Cocker and Dirty Pretty Things respectively) I gave them one last chance.....

Blog post image preview This has to be the greatest cover of the year. The version recorded at NPR's Bryant Park location is even more stripped down, without the drums or bass-line heard on the studio version. 10.0! The "Police Story" cover from the album ist also rad.

Dirty Projectors Give Black Flag Songs A Whole New Sound

Today's "Song of the Day" on NPR is one that seems hauntingly familiar to old-skool punk fans. But those who would get that sense of recognition would probably brush it off, thinking "Bah, this is a catchy pop song. I don't listen to pop..." Well, this is true, it is a pop song, but it once was a raging punk song, blasted out of crunchy guitar cabs and screeched over by Henry Rollins in the early 80's. The Dirty Projectors have created an entire album based on Black Fl... MORE

I suggest you do the same, and soon, because there's something distinctly doomed about them...

Project that dirt, baby.

Album: New Attitude *

Finally finally finally the Austin radio station KVRX has posted a couple mp3s of the Dirty Projectors' live set from circa SXSW (and circa the show I saw them at during Noisepop this year). (That was a link to their Myspace where you can hear some fairly amazing studio tracks but this is a link to those live tracks.) If you haven't heard the New Attitude EP, I recommend this be the first thing you listen to. If you want to get a taste of their shows - which are definitely... MORE

Fucked for Life

Artist:
Album: New Attitude

I'm kind of embarrassed about this, but apparently, my most played song for the week is now "Fucked for Life," by the Dirty Projectors. There's nothing wrong with the song. It's sort of a baroque chamber pop, afro-funk, free-range, Ph.D candidate stoked on life and drugs kind of thing. Out there, but interesting. I thought it sounded like a cross between Akron/Family and Skeleton and the Girl-Faced Boys. But the name is bugging me ... not only obscene, but kind of a d... MORE
