So the Dirty Projectors headlined our After the Jump Fest fundraiser on New Years Eve. I showed up for Neimo, and stayed for these guys at midnight. Critically acclaimed! Not having been bowled over by the previous sets I had seen (opening for Jarvis Cocker and Dirty Pretty Things respectively) I gave them one last chance.....
Today's "Song of the Day" on NPR is one that seems hauntingly familiar to old-skool punk fans. But those who would get that sense of recognition would probably brush it off, thinking "Bah, this is a catchy pop song. I don't listen to pop..." Well, this is true, it is a pop song, but it once was a raging punk song, blasted out of crunchy guitar cabs and screeched over by Henry Rollins in the early 80's. Finally finally finally the Austin radio station KVRX has posted a couple mp3s of the Dirty Projectors' live set from circa SXSW (and circa the show I saw them at during Noisepop this year). (That was a link to their Myspace where you can hear some fairly amazing studio tracks but this is a link to those live tracks.) I'm kind of embarrassed about this, but apparently, my most played song for the week is now "Fucked for Life," by the Dirty Projectors. There's nothing wrong with the song. It's sort of a baroque chamber pop, afro-funk, free-range, Ph.D candidate stoked on life and drugs kind of thing. Out there, but interesting. I thought it sounded like a cross between Akron/Family and Skeleton and the Girl-Faced Boys. But the name is bugging me ... not only obscene, but kind of a d... MORE
