This Friday, I have an interview scheduled with Dengue Fever.
I'll be catching up with the Los Angeles based group prior to their performance at the Independent in San Francisco.
If you've never heard of Dengue Fever you should get around to it, they're a pretty far out and unique group. I'm rather excited to sit down with them and pick their collective brain.
Their sound combines Cambodian pop music and lyrics with good ol' fashioned psychedelic rock. T... MORE

The party's in full swing. Whatever bug I've got, he and his clan are really rocking the joint. I feel like the three characters in "The Darjeeling Limited" have merged into one entity that's fighting an internal battle over which OTC medication would be the best to mortally succumb to. Owen Wilson is, of course winning, and his suggestion to triple the generic decongestant, double-up on the vicodin tabs (left from last year appedectomy, after which I don't remember b... MORE

Words of Rumi……………
Translated by Coleman Barks Enough Words? How does a part of the world leave the world?
How can wetness leave water? Don’t try to put out a fire
by throwing on more fire!
don’t wash a wound with blood! No matter how fast you run,
your shadow more then keeps up.
sometimes, it’s in front! Only full, over head sun
diminishes your shadow. But that shadow has been serving you!
what hurts you, blesses you.

Note that you can download the Dengue Fever track I picked tonight from my website's blog. There's some stuff in this show that is new to pat radio ( Umbrella Men, Moon High), and I lean on some old favorites. Various linkages are below. I'm reasonably sure we will have an in-studio guest next week...

Notes of an Aboriginalien….. In the foreground of our mind, without even noticing, we seem to limit our way of interacting with other beings within terms we can explain to ourselves, with notable exceptions. When two humans interact and it is taken for the great depth it has to offer, it seems worlds collide! When we try to understand how we know this information and how we know what it means, we also attempt to take credit for this skillful act. But our brains ... MORE

This is how I heard the music of Dengue Fever described once...and I couldn't have said it better. A wonderful blend of African,Middle Eastern, acid jazz, and R & B with elements of rock and pop mixed in for good measure...its nothing if not eclectic...and incredible.... MORE

Today's two-person review is brought to you by Sage and Ethan.
Sage's Score: 7.0
Ethan's Score: 6.0 ST: So today we're reviewing Venus on Earth by Cambodian psychedelic pop-lounge rock band, Dengue Fever. EE: Seriously. I tried entering that into the genre category in iTunes. I had to settle with "religious." ST: Not "world"? EE: Nah. I don't have much "religious" ... figured I'd spread my genre list out a bit. Also, when I think of world musi... MORE

Dengue Fever is the amazing L.A.-based alt-rock band featuring Cambodian-born singer Chhom Nimol. Their new album is Venus On Earth and here's a cool track off it.
They were written up in the New York Times recently:

Caught all these folks at The Casbah in San Diego about three weeks ago. Softlightes is just a mellow four-piecer and though I wasn't initially stoked on their sound when I looked them up on iTunes, who isn't eventually won over by a cozy live show at a super sweet venue? (Those of you who've ever been to The Casbah, vouch for me here!) Dengue Fever is a Cambodian pop rock band whose lead singer lyricizes mainly in Khmer - she really gets you going crazy! I guess they ... MORE
