The young Nashville-via-Brooklyn-via-Chicago-via-Michigan man has returned with a second album. David Vandervelde's debut landed him on our list of ones to watch, squarely on the back of the Bolan/Bowie revivalism of "Nothin' No." This time out it sounds like he's still enamored with the '70s, and again he's worked with ex-Wilco bro Jay Bennett. "Someone Like You"'s lyrics still sound like a yo...
When you are as old as I am (not telling, but you can guess), and you come across a newer group or artists bringin' back the sounds of the 70's, in a good way, it's a refreshing sound to behold. This artist can morph his sound into that of many of our favorites from the past. He can get T-Rexy, Bowie-ish, Neil Young like, Stonezee, soft rock Bread style, and the list goes on. IMHO, this is one g...
David Vandervelde sound like a cross between Ween and Marc Bolan from T-Rex...at least to this untrained ear. I just love this CD....popped it back in for the first time in a long time, as I see he is coming to town in a couple of weeks, and my love for it came rushing back to me!
I am thinking this is my third post on the topic of David V. I love his stuff. And he finally has a video out for the first single 'Jacket'Musically, I hear a cross between T Rex and Ween, with much more straight forward lyrics...He is criss crossing the country this summer supporting the album, including a spot on this year's Lollapalooza lineup.
David is a new discovery for me. LOVE this song. The vocals have a cool 'ween-like' quality to them, with much more straight forward lyrics. I have been listening this album, The Moonstation House Band all day today. I don't know much else about him, other then he works frequently with Jay Bennett who used to be in Wilco. Give this a spin and leave feedback if you want, don't spare my feelings!...
its been a cloudy couple of months on mog. weve lost some great moggers, but now an elite in his prime climbs the stairway. honestly, i cant say i knew him as well as you all did, but i really wish i could. so i guess i can only suggest one thing in times of mourning. one... song. this song.
I am SO excited to have some new David Vandervelde music to listen to. I remember being blown away when I got his debut last year...he sounded to me like the perfect mix of Gary Louris from the Jayhawks and Marc Bolan.
What is it with this town?Last week it was Bobby Bare, Jr. This week, it's David Vandervelde. What a fantastic way to spend two Sundays in a row at Mercury Lounge. The late great mogger Satisfied Mind, turned me on to this extremely talented vintagetastic singer/songwriter a while back. And he had some pretty amazing T-Rex, Moody Blues vibes on that first record. This one is a bit more Bread, Neil...
vandervelde's record has some great vintage sounds reminiscent of t-rex, bowie, the moody blues and george harrisoni was definitely interested in seeing how that all translated live, especially the tunes like "murder in michigan" that have lush string arrangementsand vandervelde went in the absolute opposite direction with a super stripped down approachthe classic rock power trio is indeed aliv...
This is the new video for 'Jacket' by David Vandervelde who gives us some Ziggy-era Bowie rock minus the glam. This guy wears his 70s rock influences on his sleeve. Bowie, T-rex, ELO, you can hear it all in his music and with his new album 'The Moonstation House Band' he has really done his homework. Its a solid album and is already a contender for album of the year. Beleive the Hype on this one!
jason molina much, david? i freakin love david vandervelde's waiting for the sunrise and i think a lot of people would too if secretly canadian actually released a single that was a better representation of the record moreso than the first one they released, "i will be fine." "i will be fine" works beautifully as an [...]
David Vandervelde is a multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter who has also earnt a crust as a recording engineer and producer. At age 19 he moved to Chicago and shacked up (as in lived in and shared a studio with and ate, drank and slept music: no hanky-panky) with Jay Bennett (ex-Wilco) for two years whilst both created their own solo releases. Vandervelde's debut of exhuberant classic Bolan/...
Was just reading Vandervelde’s myspace blog and saw that he has posted a link to a free album he recorded with a band called “Where the Moon Came From”. It’s a good song if you like the psych-rock but it’s also just interesting to hear him doing something different. Warning, it is an album with [...]
Monday April 16th 2007, David Vandervelde performed at the basement to a underwhelming but enthusiastic crowd of listeners. Probaly Due to the fact that the concert was on a monday night the crowd was less then stellar, but David and his band didnt fail to dissapoint. We got there a little late and the band still hadnt arrived at the venue. A amazing local band who shall remain nameless(since I...
