Station to Station

Taking the detached plastic soul of Young Americans to an elegant, robotic extreme, Station to Station is a transitional album that creates its own distinctive style. Abandoning any pretense of being a soulman, yet keeping rhythmic elements of soul, David Bowie positions himself as a cold, clinical crooner and explores a variety of styles. Everything from epic allads and disco to synthesized avant pop is present on Station to Station, but what ties it together is Bowie's cocaine-induced paranoia and detached musical persona. At its heart, Station to Station is an avant-garde art-ock album, most explicitly on "TVC 15" and the epic sprawl of the title track, but also on the cool crooning of "Wild Is the Wind" and "Word on a Wing," as well as the disco stylings of "Golden Years." It's not an easy album to warm to, but its epic structure and clinical sound were an impressive, individualistic achievement, as well as a style that would prove enormously influential on post-punk.

::Buy Station to Station::Back in the day I was a DJ at a little college radio station in the middle of Pennsylvania. Our broadcast radius was all of 5 miles, and included a state pen. Most of my listeners were prisoners who wrote me letters begging me to play more punk, or asking me if I'd go out with them after they got out.I had a show from 1-3 in the morning and almost no one on campus list...

Taste the goodness that is David Bowie.

There is something about when David Bowie decides to lay down a groove that makes my whole world go round. You know, I can admit that I'm not the kind of Bowie fan that knows every obscure non-radio track. I'm a casual, radio-lite, Bowie's Greatest kind of listener and yet... Whenever I hear his songs pumping through my stereo... I go all crazy inside. When he wants you to dance, he doesn't pla...

...it's the birthday of legendary concert promoter Bill Graham born Wolfgang Grajonca in Berlin, Germany in 1931. A Jew, he was forced to flee Berlin at the age of ten, crossing Europe primarily on foot to escape the rising shadow of the Nazi regime-- he'd end up in a orphanage in NY and was adopted by an American couple who lived in the Bronx. Later, after serving in the Korean War he wound up...

She hated the fact that I thought Bowie was the definition of cool. I just wish she could be here to see this. Oh, she's not dead, she's just a bitch.I'm kidding, I'm kidding. She's married happily with kids, so she got the last laugh. Bitch.Again, kidding, just kidding.

I'm keyed up, and not just because it's Funky Friday - although that should be enough of a reason. I'm going to my first Bootie event in Los Angeles tomorrow night. (Members of the San Francisco crew that launched Bootie - usually DJs Adrian and the Mysterious D - host and spin tracks at the monthly editions of the mash-up party held in L.A. and New York City, not to mention the occasional over...

Maybe it's because I'm an old fart, but it seems to me that there are very few musicians that generate awe these days. When I was a kid, you'd look at people like Bowie, Zeppelin, David Byrne and think "where did these people COME FROM?" They all seemed to have otherwordly presence and talent. There was no blueprint, no formula that could be copied in order to make endless iterations of these a...

David Bowie & Afghanistan- Golden Years?

Last weekend the New York Times Week in Review featured a misleading story on the "Golden Years" of Afghanistan. I was there; they're weren't a golden age. They were kind of Bronze Age. Elisabeth Bumiller, the writer, was once voted the Worst Campaign Journalist of 2004. She's gotten worse with time-- unless her beat is Moth Goose tales. I've got the full Afghanistan version of this story at Do...

My mixtape to end 2008!

For my site I made a killer mixtape (or well, that's the opinion of the maker at least. XD) to say goodbye to 2008. 12 tracks made or released in 2008, and three tracks to glue it together and enhance the vibe. Give it a spin if you are in need of some music, enjoy, and everyone a belated Happy Holidays!http://ikrszine.blogspot.com/2007/12/mix.htmlTracklist:David Bowie- Station to Station (1976...

Its amazing what a shuffle play can bring together. First this simply sublime track from the brilliant Mr Bowie. Then this unholy in/en-vocation from Mr Coleman and his Tribe.Only just got the album from which the above track comes - I think they have really captured the true essence of the band on this one, and got the overall sound just right. Really makes you want to go and see them live. Goo...

Well now I've got plenty of hot tracks to spew on here, some of which are obscure and widely unknown. But since I'm new and I'm trying to win the hearts of like minded moggers, so I'm going to choose a definite hit!He may have been peaking on coke at this time in his career but Bowie was productive through and through. This track has some authentic soul sound and cries "good times".
