David Bowie returned to relatively conventional ock & roll with Scary Monsters, an album that effectively acts as an encapsulation of all his '70s experiments. Reworking glam rock themes with avant-garde synth flourishes, and reversing the process as well, Bowie creates dense but accessible music throughout Scary Monsters. Though it doesn't have the vision of his other classic records, it wasn't designed to break new ground -- it was created as the culmination of Bowie's experimental genre-shifting of the '70s. As a result, Scary Monsters is Bowie's last great album. While the music isn't far removed from the post-punk of the early '80s, it does sound fresh, hip, and contemporary, which is something Bowie lost over the course of the '80s. [Rykodisc's 1992 reissue includes re-recorded versions of "Space Oddity" and "Panic in Detroit," the Japanese single "Crystal Japan," and the British single "Alabama Song."]

Turning up the Gamma filter, and pulling out the blue screen - this classic Bowie tune, is a nice psychedelic video for full moon lunatics amongst us.Proving yet again that the man is timeless, I've also included the Jools performance back to back of same - I think I actually prefer the more recent live performance to the original. Incredible.Later with Jools...

I recently found this previously-loved album, Sound & Vision 111 - a collection with some funny things on it, like "Heroes" in German (I studied German for 7 years, but sung it still makes me giggle), bought it partly for the cover. Anyhow, it's suiting my mood. Looks like the family & pet deaths are starting up again, well I hope it isn't another series, but neither my favourite uncle nor my...

DAVID BOWIE Up The Hill Backwards

So this is on the top of my list of favorite David Bowie songs. Why? Well, it has two of my favorites: 7/4 time and a slow 4 on the floor. Then add crazy lyrics, some funky bass, guitar pyrotechnics...and you got Bowie's follow-up single to the huge "Ashes To Ashes." Odd choice, innit?
