All Music GuideThe best way to hear pianist Dave McKenna is solo. His joyous left-hand basslines are always enjoyable, as his knack for performing rarely heard but superior songs. On this solo set, McKenna not only revives the Bix Beiderbecke-associated "Singing the Blues" but "I'll Be a Friend with Pleasure" and "Louisiana" too, along with some tender ballads and even a Michael Franks song ("Don't Be Blue"). This fine all-around recording offers many fine examples of Dave McKenna's magical swing piano.
