Blog post image preview Fellow Moggers, i had the incredible fortune to see Dave Brubeck and his son Chris play last night at a private event for the great work of SFJazz(http://www.sfjazz.org/). there were under 100 people there, and he shuffled out to great applause, sat down at my friend's piano and played an improved twinkley little opener that had Dave's distinctive style written all over it. he then told a great little story of his early years in SF when he lived near 18th and castro, and c... Folks, you owe it to yourselves to become familiar with Dave Brubeck. This man is a walking encyclopedia of Piano Jazz of the twentieth century. He has played with all the greats, and has mentored many as well. His influences are as far reaching and curious as his influence.

A LITTLE TOUCH OF BRUBECK IN THE MORNING: SUNDAY UNDER COVERS

Artist:
Album: Dave Digs Disney
Track: *Jazz Wish
(46)
On a cold sunday morning, First cup o'joe in hand I turn on the itunes and hit shuffle; Ah, the Dave Brubeck Quartet with a sweet little wake-up call.Dave Brubeck, piano player extraordinaire, was a versatile, inventive player who explored the world of jazz and extended it's bounderies and added to it's vocabulary. From the 'boppers' to the smooth jazz set, everyone who came to the piano subsequently built on aspects of Brubeck's style. This charming little track finds D. ... MORE

A few years ago, my colleagues and I were on a cruise around Seattle's Lake Washington, one of those mandatory fun, team-building morale events. As the boat cruised inside Yarrow Point on the east side of the lake, the tour guide pointed out Kenny G's house, at which point someone next to me said, "So that's the house that schlock built." In a parenthetical note in an earlier post, I'd said that I consider "smooth jazz" to be an oxymoron, but that doesn't quite capture ... MORE

Brubeck

Artist:
Album: Time Out
Track:
(5)
I saw Dave Brubeck last year at the Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada. It seemed like it took an eternity for him to simply walk across the stage to the microphone to address the audience and then another eternity to walk to his piano, but once they started playing I couldn't tell whether he was 85 or 25 years old. Amazing.

Blog post image preview On Saturday we were treated to one Jazz's Greatest of greats Dave Brubeck. At 86 years of age the man still has the chops to have an audience demand an encore again and again. This time, the park was flooded with an array of lawn chairs seated by a multi-generational audience. It's great to see the young ones come out for such an event! Shows us all how Brubeck's music has survived the test of time!

Came home last night to hear the sound of Dave Brubeck coming from the study, where my 11 year old daughter was doing homework. Turns out she heard 'Take Five' on a TV ad, had hummed it to her mum and been digging the CD for the rest of the day. Last spring she wanted another song from a TV ad and detective work tracked it down to Johnny Guitar Watson's 'Gangster Of Love'. Some musicians go on about how their work is sacred and will never be profaned by appearing on a ... MORE

of all the jazz i've been listening to, which really isn't to much, i've really come to appreciate dave brubeck's work the most. maybe it's because it's what i first really started paying attention too. my dad's friend, an older guy, piano player and tuner, recommended brubeck to me when we started discussing odd time signatures in music. so i gave it a listen. the track "blue rondo a la turk" on the album "time out" is a masterpeice. it's got it's hectic upbeat tune to st...
