I just discovered that our new car has satellite radio; to the best of my knowledge we aren't paying for it... (The car was a Hertz vehicle; maybe they didn't deactivate it when they sold it off).

Anyway, i've been listening to Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the current "Coolest Song of the Week" (or whatever) is a little ditty entitled The Streets of Atlanta, by the Mother Truckers, who hail from Austin. (Click here for a sample of the song from the Mother Trcke... MORE

Blog post image preview Sturgell did a post about the crowd getting out of hand at an Australian festival (not really violent, apparently, just sort of a crush - sort of like the deaths at the WHo concer in Cincinatti years ago. It reminde dme of an experience of my own that was similar on a smaller scale, so i did a comment - and here it is as a musical memoir as well: About twenty years ago i was in the pit at a Mardi Gras show at Jimmy's in New Orleans - Dash Rip Rock was the headline; it w... Blog post image preview Here's a great rockin "she done me wrong" cowpunk song I could not help but post. It's quite funny, in a hurtin' kinda way. Here's where you can hear a bit more. http://www.sonicbids.com/epk/epk.aspx?epk_id=86411 http://www.alternativetentacles.com/product.php?product=1340&sd=1m82be9G5DlXC4WLXw2

A Night at Tipitina's

Blog post image preview Sometime in October 2001, i think (the photos are in a file i must have created around December 2002 on the computer) - A Night at Tipitina's, New Orleans. Cowboy Mouth opened, and then Bill, Fred and Hoakie regrouped into Dash Rip Rock and proceeded to show why their brand of eclectic cowpunk thoroughly kicked ass.

This is actually a composite of three separate shots; i was shooting 800 speed film with no flash - "Available darkness" as we used to call it in the film da... MORE

Blog post image preview I posted a comment on Anna's MOG (and, no, this is not that comment recycled) in which i mentioned being at Jimmy's in New Orleans for a Dash Rip Rock New Year show. Jimmy's (Red circle in the above satellite pic; 8200 Willow Street, New Orleans. The big white building - yes, it does cover a whle city block - is the trolley barn; in the full-sized version of this pic you can see the tracks turning off Carrollton Avenu, running up the middle of Willow Street and swing... Cowpunk 2

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: white lighning, jambalaya, delta dawn
Blog post image preview _This started as a comment replying to a comment on my last post, which mentioned that the Jason & the Scorchers sample i'd posted sounded rather rockabilly._ There tends to be a strong rockabilly element in cowpunk, both because of a certain affinity of attitude, and because part of cowpunk is shucking the Nashville slickness and getting back to the roots of country, where it was difficult to tell who was country and who was rockabilly - consider that Carl Perkins, Elvi... Dash Rip Rock Had the best live shows. The crowd was as amped as thier music. They were really funny on stage too. Jason and the Scorchers were awsome too. They did a cover of the Stones 19th Nervous Breakdown that was killer. It was fast and had a rockabilly tilt to it. Man...I wish I still had that album.
