I suppose if I was going to end it all, I would have to think long and hard about the songs that would be playing while I did it. I mean, I am not suicidal usually. Only the past few days I have spent too much time at home, and when I get bored of my own company I plot how to rid myself of this uninspiring house-guest. Plus, it is my 28th birthday in a few weeks and naturally, thoughts at this age turn to mortality. That is normal right? Anyway, today I was thi... MORE

So, I saw Negativland. It was amazing. I was blown away. Fuck the Tape-Beatles. The Tape-Beatles had no idea what was going on. These guys obviously understand a lot about the sound collage or whatever you want to call what they do. More importantly they seem to understand that there are serious things rock and roll can do, when the instruments are wielded by a) smart people who don't take themselves too seriously, b) when you have message. The message that is purveyed... MORE

You know the feeling you get when you're listening to a great record. Your heart does some pitter-pattering, you've lost your breath a few times, and you either want to dance around your living room, stare out a window in introspection, or call your ex, right? Then sadly, you've reached the last song. Not that you couldn't start the whole thing over again, you just want to prolong it a little while longer. When it does finally come to an end, all you can do is bear with ... MORE

Caught Danielson at Middle East Club last night in Cambridge, MA. Ladyhawk and a local Mass band called UV Protection opened the show, which was much more crowded than I expected. Still, I had a good time, and even though the sound was a bit off, the show was awesome. 3$ PBR tall boys and cute M.I.T/Harvard girls = teh win.... MORE

I've recently come across this band. The feeling of something new didn't, at first, grace my ears. But then, I listened intently, and, well, this band has something. I'm not very religious. But, recently, my tastes for artist that don't outright come out and say they are religious but have the context of religious virtues hidden in their songs are, well, what I've been listening to recently. Sufjan Stevens is a perfect example. His song Casmir Pulanski Day is a genius a... MORE

Daniel Smith gifts us with a new release entitled Ships under the Danielson moniker. The album isn’t a concept but a few tracks are loosely tied together with the mentioning of the word “ships” be it a poetic reference to the “majestic suffix” or a literal ship. Ships is as close to “radio friendly” as Danielson has ever been. The quirkiness is still firmly in place but those quirks have been massaged with great production work that helps the album appeal to those who ma... MORE

So, you ask me, this is album of the year so far. Danielson finally breaks through here...They're taking everything that made artists like Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens and Deerhoof so fantastic and combining it seamlessly into one rock record (No coincedence that Sufjan and guys from Deerhoof both guest.) Unique and surprising song structures that are a perfect complement to the deeply heartfelt lyrics, sculpted into a 30-piece wall of sound that sounds Phil-Spectoresq... MORE
