Blog post image preview I saw Daniel Johnston for the first time on friday. It was great. Scout Niblett, Jad Fair and James McNew from Yo La Tengo played a few songs together, then Scout, James McNew, Mark Linkous and Daniel each played a few songs. Finally all the support acts played as Daniel's backup band for a greatest hits-ish set including Walking The Cow, Casper The Friendly Ghost, True Love Will Find You In The End, Rock This Town and Devil Town among others. I hope he comes back to Engla... MORE

Daniel Johnston Interview: Songs of Pain

Artist:
Other Tags: The Devil, interviews
So it’s about 20 minutes before I’m supposed to do my interview with songwriting legend Daniel Johnston when my girlfriend Kim walks into the Comet Tavern. I’m drinking a Mac & Jacks African Amber and trying to get all of my notes and shit organized because I’m still under the misguided idea that I may actually be able to gear the upcoming conversation with the manic depressive musician into some direction of my choosing. Already, nothing is going as planned. I hand Kim a ... MORE

Road Trippin'

Artist:
Album: It's Spooky
Track:

2 tires,3 traffic violations and an endless amount of music listening later,I'm back and surprisingly alive. As of today I am never driving FAR distances again.I'm taking aeroooplanes instead. My friends influenced by a number of substances, gave me the opportunity to take charge of the radio.Now.. If you'd ask me prior to the trip which floyd album was the weirdest one, I would probably refer to "A Saucerful of Secrets" but fortunately for me one of my stoopid comrades ... MORE

Blog post image preview For those who click on this link ... and then go WTF is this? Well believe me I do sympathize with your initial dismay at hearing these early Daniel Johnston recordings ... certainly they are not polished ... but if you might suspend your preconceptions for a moment and really listen to the actual songs underneath ... Well then you might discover what many others now recognize as uniquely poignant song craft. What many others now recognize as the genius of Daniel Johns... MORE

Free music video of True Love Will Find You (22)
Well I'm nearly speechless at this ... While researching another band 'The Capital Years' I stumbled across this incredible story about outsider artist Daniel Johnston here "When I was a kid, probably nine, I used to bang around on the piano, making up horror movie themes. When I got a bit older, I'd be mowing my lawn and I'd make up songs and sing them. No one could hear me 'cause of the lawn mower." As a teenager, Daniel and his friends began to record the... MORE

And he "supposedly" went crazy? You got to be kidding. That is just Fox News talking. Daniel Johnston is perfectly sane and baggy black sweat pants are Indie cool. The video from the Henry Rollins Show says it all. http://www.hihowareyou.com http://www.myspace.com/dannyjohnston http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Johnston

WFMU Radio Broadcast from "The Devil and Daniel Johnston"

Artist:
Album: The Devil And Daniel Johnston (DVD)
Track: Special Feature
(33)
Blog post image preview One of the special features on the DVD The Devil And Daniel Johnston is a radio broadcast that shows his quickness and unique humor. I found the interview both hilarious and mesmerizing. I ripped the audio before mailing the DVD back to NetFlix. Hope you enjoy as much as I have.

I have me a crush on Daniel Johnston

(55)
I went to the Sunday Night Adventure Club on the weekend and watched and enjoyed Josie Long, who reminded me that I actually really love Daniel Johnson. He came up in her routine because her show, titled "trying is good", is on the theme that no matter what you are trying for, it is good to put in a lot of effort, regardless of how misguided it is (her example is of the fancy dress party she went to as half princess Diana and half Mother Theresa - the glorious dead of 199... Al Gore

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(160)
Blog post image preview Perhaps Al Gore is in need of a theme song. He might not want one but then again he might not know about the benifits of one. So here are some suggestions for Mr. Gore:
Daniel Johnston - Silly Love (Fun)This one would show Gore's a real softy but sort of a crazy, rejected softy; but still hopeful. Definately not a clear cut choice.
David Bowie - Five Years (Ziggy Stardust)This one might be problematic as well, possibly causing a nation-wide sing-a-long. Then the President... MORE

Daniel Johnston

Artist:
Album: The Late Great Daniel Johnston: Discovered Covered
I was flipping through On Demand offerings yesterday and just happened to come across a documentary with a title and description that intrigued me. The film was The Devil and Daniel Johnston. It was described as "Daniel Johnston is a manic-depressive genius singer/songwriter/artist, revealed in this portrait of madness, creativity and love. The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a stunning portrait of a musical and artistic genius who nearly slipped away." What a find. Thi... MORE

Ok, I'm not as much interested in the video of this post (although it is pretty great). For the past hour I had been trying to upload this song (and I think I have it in the wrong format). Anyway, this is the preview for the Devil and Daniel Johnston with the song True Love Will Find You in the End. I just finished watching the movie for the second time and, like the first experience, I was rather profoundly moved by the music as well as Dan's story. Every time I lis... MORE

Johnston vs Beck vs Tweedy - Fight!

(124)
Daniel Johnston’s, Beck’s or Wilco’s version of ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’. Three amazing versions of the song but which one do I truly love? Daniel Johnston is a amazing lyricist. All his song are beautifully written and are some of the most wonderful song lyrics I've heard (he's no Ben Gibbard/Wayne Coyne though). I love the lo-fi quality of most of Johnstons song including 'True Love Will Find You In The End', plus he wrote the song originally so that gives ... MORE

I've been getting increasingly obsessed with Daniel Johnston ever since watching "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" a couple months ago. I recently bought COUNTINUED STORY/ HI HOW ARE YOU?... and while it is incredibly under-produced and not as accessible as the other albums of his I have, it does have several bright spots; the main one being a song called "Etiquette". This song always makes me smile, in the least, and usually laugh out loud. It's a great little slice of happ... MORE
