Little snapshots like this are reasons why I have such an appreciation for certain musicians. First off (as I've understood it),this is a snapshot of some studio time during the making of D'angelo's Voodoo sessions. D is on keys, covering a wide range of territory, Pino Palladino is on bass completely ripping it up and then there's Mr. ?uest going note for note with one of the most famous breaks in recording history. This one's from D'angelo's fabled Voodoo tour (w/the remarkable ?uestlove on drums)of a few years ago. Having heard the original off of the Brown Sugar album, I simply wasn't prepared to this audio onslaught! So many great people in this band and a great version of this song.

Say what you want about D'Angelo when he's outside the studio, but he's pressed some gorgeous wax. I think this is perhaps the best cover of a Roberta Flack song ever, and that includes Lauren Hill's by-the-numbers "Killing Me Softly."
