Tune in NPR for Newport fests

This weekend brings the Newport Folk Festival, and Nat'l Public Radio will be streaming many of the performances live from the not-that-folky concert. This year, the Festival added acts not normally known as folk performers, so listen for sets from Richie Havens, Cowboy Junkies, Steve Earle, and Jakob Dylan (whose dad Bob got booed there in [...]~~

--- - |- First, please accept our apologies for the random changes in the appearance of this site over the next few weeks. I'm trying to make it more interesting to look at, but since I am woefully ignorant of web design, things could get a little funky looking for awhile, while I tutorial myself through various issues. Any missing links will be shortly fixed, also.Now.I promised last week I...

WHO WILL TAKE AWAY HIS LICENSE TO KILL? SUNDAY COVERS WITH THE COWBOY JUNKIES

The Cowboy Junkies cover one of Dylan's lesser known gems. "License To Kill" is a beautiful tragedy, a poignant smoldering meditation on a world of technological nightmares & young souls fried in the Fat Of The Land. A timeless lament set in an anonymous but vaguely sparse landscape of small dreams & simple lives, the narrator struggles to see the world through the faceless woman's eyes but ...

"...but My Aim is Getting Better."That's the title of "*a book*":http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671897500/mikewebersweberw which, for want of a better word, i'll call a screwball suspense novel, and it's also the title of the song that the heroine of the book is writing.*Sarah Shankman* (who has a series of mysteries about reporter Samantha Adams, as well) writes books in which *everyt...

I had another one of those vivid soundtrack flashbacks yesterday in the car on the way to work. Michelle was dropping me off, we were listening to our favorite station 100.3 when "Sweet Jane" came on the radio. How I loved this song when I first heard it in high school. The Cowboy Junkies were my band. I tried telling everyone I knew about this band but they all knew me as the guy who likes "we...

200 More Miles - The Cowboy Junkies featuring Ryan Adams
about 1 year ago

I rediscovered the magic from the holy sessions when The Cowboy Junkies went back with Trinity Revisited last year. The Junkies invited Vic Chestnutt, Natalie Merchant and Ryan Adams to sit on the band and replay the songs from the original sessions in the same church where they recorded Trinity Sessions ten years earlier in 1987.One of the best songs from these new sessions is Ryan Adams takin...

Lester Loves the 80's pt 26, or Mo(u)rning music
over 2 years ago

This is quite an amazing album. Recorded at a time when digital recording was coming to the fore, it's as crystal quiet and winter's night beautiful as anything I've heard. It was recorded live in a church with a single microphone, in one day. It's a mix of covers and original which should be required listening for each of us.

My 1,000th Song

As a latecomer to the whole iTunes thing, I've just finally started uploading my music collection over the past few weeks. And tonight, I finally hit the 1,000 song milestone! (Only 20,000 more to go....)The song that did it: The Cowboy Junkies' "Misguided Angel." Hm...does that mean my use of iTunes is misguided, too? I don't think so...in fact, after resisting it for so long, I'm surprised at...
