oh, how I wish I could literally spend a Sunday under the covers - but my menial, low-paid job as a laundress awaits; I swear, my kids & I should change our surnames to "Bucket"! About Little Wing - I'm not musically knowledgable but to my untrained ear, Johnette's version doesn't dis Jimi's a bit, and I like that thing The Blonde does with guitars. Here we go:

Lead singer Johnette Napolitano previously was in the band Dream 6 with guitarist James Mankey in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. In 1986, they signed with I.R.S. Records and they needed a new name. Their labelmate at the time, Michael Stipe (lead singer of REM) suggested the name "Concrete Blonde". It was his way of describing the mix of their heavy rock sound and their deep, introspective lyr...

oh never mind, it's too broad a topic ... but the saga continues, and I'm enjoying the dance. Even back in the days when the lyrics to I Wanna Be Your Friend Again kind of touched a nerve - a couple of hundred moons ago - I couldn't help but find them, and Johnette's delivery, very funny. If we can step back once in a while and laugh at ourselves, well, I think it makes the journey just that...

Concrete Blonde's 1990 LP "Bloodletting" contained their breakthrough single "Joey", which other folks have posted about on MOG, but my fave on this album was "Caroline", a haunting, rocking song about a disappeared girl.....the video, rarely seen, is superb. I've attached 2 vids - a link to the the "official" promo video (embedding disable dammit), and another homebrewed vid from YouTube with ...

I'm pretty wigged out by the stress level in my life these days, but an afternoon of Hallowe'en preparation, and all the last-minute glue-gunning and costume rescue and trying to get some real food into four kids this year, 3 teens and an almost-teen, well, it just did me a world of good. Man, I love this time of year.

That's what I always remember about Concrete Blonde. I saw them perform ages ago (must have been late 80's) at a club in Tempe, AZ. This was a very small venue and I spent most of the concert leaning on the stage, front and center. At one point, I became mesmerized watching the drummer. Kind of a big, burly hairy guy. I was watching how intently he focused on his drumming and how his whole body...

The only song of Concrete Blonde that I ever heard on regular radio back in the day (will praise the glory of satellite radio another time) was "Joey", and, while it's a great song, when I finally got a whole collection of their music, I didn't understand why they didn't have more on the charts, more often, because I personally loved everything about them. They've all moved on now, and their a...

A great song to drive around to and sing at the top of your lungs. The live version is fantastic.

It's quite powerful how a particular song can bring on memories like a flood. This was the case today as I was listening to one of my favorite 90's band (albeit short lived) Concrete Blonde. For some reason whenever I hear the song "Joey" I think of hot weather, boot camp and margaritas. Sometimes I can't even remember much at all of when I was 19 and going to basic training at Lackland AFB in T...
