So, one guy, his guitar, sultry lighting, and an accoustic set should equal a passive, relaxed evening of music and ambient sounds, right?
Wrong.
So wrong with Colin Meloy. Through an hour long set, then fifteen minutes of encores, Meloy had the audience practically eating out of the palm of his hands; hungry for more each time, Meloy pushed his music and talents to a limit that can only be reached in a live setting. How's that for a long and annoying title for a post? Well, it does sum up his show, but is hardly insightful, so I'll carry on... I returned to the scene of Ben Gibbard's solo show almost an entire year since I'd been there for that, only this time I was sans camera, which was beyond dumb because Mr. Meloy put on quite the show as always and I should have expected some film-worthy banter. On his previous solo tour, Colin Meloy paid tribute to Morrissey and British folk singer Shirley Collins. This spring, when Meloy heads out on another solo trek, he will be singing the songs of soul legend Sam Cooke. The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy will release a new album of live recordings from his 2006 solo tour, dubbed Colin Meloy Sings Live! on April 8th. The two-week tour across the U.S. found Meloy covering tracks by British vets, folksinger Shirley Collins and the Smiths frontman Morrissey - both of whom Meloy honored separately with live EP cover albums (i.e. Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey and Colin Meloy Sings Shirley Collins). Colin Meloy of The Decemberist's released an EP of about five songs in 2005 while on tour with the Decemberists. Its his take on some of his favorite Morrissey songs.

I've always been a huge fan of Morrissey's lyrics but (and I'm ducking and covering my head with my arms here) I just don't like Morrissey's vocalization. Some of my favorite covers are of Morrissey's songs and I recently bought Colin Meloy sings Morrissey, a 6 song CD.
