AMG Review of In the Sun

All Music GuideChicago native DJ Colette arrived on the compilation scene with the underused approach of garnishing her favorite song-based house records with her very own vocals. While it all could've gone horribly wrong, Collete had a strong voice and used it sparingly, and the only time it stole the attention was when she needed to boost the album's pull. If you set aside the stiff punk-funk house on display, there was something about employing the vocal/urntable technique of a one-woman Kosheen or Beber & Tamra and weaving in and out of what would typically be destructive diva clichés that ultimately drummed up newfound enjoyment for a dance compilation scene regularly littered with excess product.
